The City has begun the process of reviewing four proposals received from various local planning and engineering consultant firms to update the Comprehensive Plan.
It will take approximately 4 weeks to complete the evaluation review process, which includes scoring each proposal and inviting the proposers in for interviews. Once the Evaluation Committee confirms their top consultant firm, Sharon Ebert, the Community Development Director will present the Committee’s recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.
After Council decides to move this process forward, dates will be set up in late May and early June to start the community dialog on ‘Why’ we are updating the Comprehensive Plan and to provide insights on “How” land use decisions impact every resident and business in Johns Creek. Updating the Comprehensive Plan will take some time, anywhere from twelve to fifteen months. During that time, there will be at least 12 times that the City will call for public input with some form of a public meeting, online survey, and/or planning event. This is where you get to step up and offer your comments and input. As these opportunities arise, we will let you know.

Johns Creek City Council Approves 2016 Neighborhood Repaving Plan
The Johns Creek City Council approved the city’s 2016 Neighborhood Repaving Plan on March 14, which calls for resurfacing 26 subdivisions.
The original list of 12 subdivisions to be paved was expanded to 26 after the City Council increased funding for the project from $1.5 million to $5 million in the Fiscal Year 2016 budget. This accelerated approach to neighborhood repaving is projected to reduce the 5-year citywide timeline by a year from 2019 to 2018.
“Quality streets are a basic necessity that a community rightly expects,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “To improve our curb appeal, the City Council made the decision to increase the pace of our repaving plan, which helps to promote higher property values as well as our economic vitality.”
Repaving is expected to begin in April and end in late fall, weather permitting.
The Public Works Department began a concerted effort to upgrade the condition of the City’s subdivision streets last spring.
The priority for neighborhood repaving is determined by an assessment known as the Pavement Quality Index (PQI). The PQI was developed by the Army Corps of Engineers to measure cracking, potholes, rutting, weathering, and other factors.
Low PQI scores reflect the poorer conditions of the road. The lower the PQI score for a subdivision, the higher priority it receives for repaving. PQI scores were determined in 2011 by a consultant who operated a specially equipped vehicle on Johns Creek’s streets to gauge their condition.

Déjà VGB?

If you think you’ve heard this one before, you probably have, but there’s good reason VGB is in the news again in 2016. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (aka the VGB) was enacted in December 2007, and all community pools had to become compliant by December 2008, or Spring opening 2009 for seasonal pools. One of the law’s key requirements is that all commercial (public, community, or institutional) pools must update the grate coverings on their submerged suction outlets with new compliant fittings that will prevent against the 5 main types of entrapment (body, limb, mechanical, evisceration, and hair entanglement).
Why are we revisiting this law in 2016?
Part of the law required manufacturers to put expiration dates on their grates. No longer is it acceptable to wait until the grate breaks to replace it. Different manufacturers labelled their products for different expiration periods. The most common expiration periods are 5 years and7 years. That means a high percentage of grates expired in 2014, and will expire in 2016.
How do you know if you need to replace your grates in 2016?
Hopefully your association has kept good records and knows the grate manufacturer and when they were last replaced. For instance, if your pool was resurfaced since 2009, the grates may have been replaced at that time, which starts the clock over. If you’re not sure, it may require a little research on your part, and you may need the assistance of your pool company and property manager to help determine the status of your pool’s suction grates. We strongly encourage you to find out before the season to protect your liability.
You cannot count on health inspectors to cite you for expired grates, because expired grates look the same as compliant grates. They won’t know. If a suction entrapment incident occurs on expired grates, you can count on a plaintiff’s attorney to discover this information and use it against the association.

Updates on Old Alabama Road Project
Johns Creek city officials are continuing to coordinate with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), who manages the Old Alabama Road project, as well as other officials to accelerate construction.
GDOT has responded and the contractor, C.W. Matthews, has work crews back on site. Recent inaccurate reports indicate a completion date of May 2017. GDOT has now advised that the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016, weather permitting. Read more of the article here. |

Spring Park Party on April 16 in Shakerag Park
The city of Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Department invite families and kids of all ages to the city’s newest event the “Spring Park Party” held on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Johns Creek and area residents are invited to Shakerag Park, 10945 Rogers Circle, to enjoy this free, outdoor event featuring games, prizes, food, music, and other free family entertainment.
Interested groups or individuals wanting to perform can inquire about a time slot through March 17.

Farmers Market Vendor Applications Due April 8
The Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division will be accepting applications for vendors for this summer’s Farmers Marketat Newtown Park through April 8.
The 2016 Farmers Market is expected to have 30 or more vendors selling locally grown produce or locally made foods. No re-selling of produce is allowed, and vendors must provide their own liability insurance.

Fulton County Names New Finalist for Superintendent Post

A little less than a month after its initial finalist withdrew his name from consideration, the Fulton County School Board has released a new candidate for the superintendent post.
The school system has revealed Dr. Jeff Rose, current superintendent of the Beaverton School District in Oregon, has been named the finalist for Fulton County schools superintendent position.
Dr. Rose, 43, has led Beaverton’s schools for the past five years and prior to that spent three years heading the Canby School District, also located in Oregon.
“Dr. Rose meets the criteria set forth in our recent community survey that asked parents, staff and other stakeholders what they want in their next superintendent,” said Linda McCain, president of the Fulton County School Board. “This job requires a skillset often found among the top CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and the board has been diligent in making this choice. We are confident we have the right new leader to help us continue to close our achievement gap and build on our current strengths.”
This latest selection comes on the heels of Philip Lanoue of the Clarke County School System withdrawing his name amid controversy surrounding how the district handled allegations that a student was allegedly raped at a high school.
A suburb of Portland, the Beaverton School District has 41,000 students in its 51 schools with similarities to Fulton’s diverse population and student achievement. Beaverton is about half minority with students speaking 94 languages whereas Fulton is about two-thirds minority. Read more of the article here. |
